Past Local Projects

- Cool Roofs
(FL 2008 - SP 2010) The science is clear cut: dark surfaces like asphalt roofs absorb more energy from the sun than light surfaces.
EWB WashU worked with social work student Mark Specht to promote the use of cool roofs by publicizing their benefits and connecting property owners with cool roofing professionals. Now Mark has turned the cool roof project into his business. Check it out How Cool!
Project Lead: Brent Sherman (BS ChE 2011)
- Operation Brightside
The folks at Operation Brightside plant lovely flowers along highways and host St. Louis' biggest annual alleyway cleanup, Project Blitz. EWB WashU completed a rain barrel collection system for the Operation Brightside office to collect rain water from the roof for watering the garden.
Project Lead: 09'-10': Bethany McDearmon (BS ChE 2010), 08'-09': Sam Fok (BS BME, EE 2011)
- World Aquarium: Journey to the Center of the Earth
The World Aquarium in the City Musuem was planning its own campus at Hanley and US-40 intersection and will be an international center for conservation research and environmentalism. EWB WashU worked on the conceptual design of the "Journey to the Center of the Earth" educational ride.
Project Lead: Wesley Chan (BS ME 2012)
- Bicycle Blender
(SU 2009) In hot and humid St. Louis, not much could beat a smoothie, except a smoothie made with a bicycle! EWB WashU partnered with The Urban Studio Café, a small coffee shop started by WashU graduates, to connect a smoothie blender to a stationary bike so visitors could experience the power of their legs to create smoothies.
Project Lead: Sam Fok (BS BME, EE 2011)

- Pyramid and Catacombs at the World Aquarium in the City Museum
(FL 2008) EWB members converted the barren concrete crawlspaces surrounding Stingray City in the World Aquarium into catacombs embedded with relics of modern life. In addition to the catacombs, the entranceway to the catacombs, once a hole under the ugly side of a fish tank, transformed into a pyramid façade beckoning the bold adventurer to explore.
Project Lead: Sam Fok (BS BME, EE 2011)

- Light-Up Drums at the Pulitzer Foundation for the Arts
(FL 2008) EWB members in collaboration with the Electrical Engineering Department and the St. Louis Science Center built the circuits for 100 light up drums for kids from local middle and high schools to use in a performance at the Pulitzer Foundation for the Arts.
Project Lead: Sam Fok (BS BME, EE 2011)
- Fencing at the Karen House
(FL 2007): EWB members volunteered at the Karen House, a hospitality house for homeless women and children in St. Louis run entirely by volunteer labor. Work included brick patchwork and tuckpointing.
Project Lead: Brittany Hagedorn (BS SSE 2008)
