International Projects

Since its inception in 2005, EWB-Wash U has traveled across the globe to assist communities and populations in need.  Please explore the following pages for more information
Mekelle Project
EWB Wash U is starting a new international project in Mekelle, Ethiopia. They will be working with a district of Mekelle, a sizeable town in northern Ethiopia. The lifeblood of this area is a school for the blind. Students will be investigating the need for different sewage and latrine options in Mekelle as their first project.
Haiti Project
The Haiti Project is a collaboration between members of Wash U's Engineers Without Borders and Meds and Food for Kids (MFK), an organization that produces a peanut-based food that is highly effective at curing malnutrition in children. Based in Haiti, the factory that makes this product employs Haitian workers and buys Haitian-grown peanuts.
In 2009, students traveled to MFK's factory in Haiti to create a factory machine maintenance schedule and to create a prototype solar peanut dryer. Currently, they are designing a new, smaller-scale peanut dryer and working to create charcoal out of waste peanut shells from the factory.

Past Projects
God's Child Association- Guatemala
Cook Stove Project
The Cook Stove Project began with a 2007 trip to Guatemala, where EWB members saw the three-stone fire, the sole means of cooking for many people in Guatemala and across the globe.  This method of cooking, besides being inefficient, fills the kitchen with smoke which women and children breathe throughout the day.
Students have developed a cheap, efficient, and clean alternative to the three-stone fire.   This "rocket" stove uses an "L"-shaped combustion chamber with a dedicated air inlet to increase airflow, temperature, and the cleanliness of the burn.
This summer, two students traveled with the EWB Professional Chapter in St. Louis to Ullannur, India, with the hope of aiding the community and sharing the rocket stove technology.
